Age and gender matter quite a bit. I'm guessing your boyfriend has a different lifestyle and interests than your mum ? It is often the case that as we get older we change our interests, our leisure activities or our profession.
Example: You are looking for a different gift for your 18-year-old daughter, who likes fashion, than you would for a retired dad. The teenage girl will be happy with a set of hybrid polishes, while dad will be happy with a set of DIY tools.
A Christmas gift for a girl might be a set of sexy lingerie, which you are unlikely to give to your mother-in-law or mother ? For mum and mother-in-law, for example, you buy elegant jewellery or a book.
Step 2 - what does she like?
What is your girlfriend interested in? What does your son do in his spare time? Or maybe your mum and dad have a hobby from years gone by that they want to get back to?
